US President Donald Trump has confirmed he will not attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa later this year, saying Vice President JD Vance will represent the United States.

Trump, who returned to the White House in January, has taken a hostile stance towards South Africa. He also announced that next year’s G20 Summit will be held at his Doral golf resort in Miami, Florida.

The President said his Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, is responsible for organising next year’s meeting. Bessent had previously skipped the Finance Minister’s segment of the G20 in Cape Town in February.

Bessent criticised South Africa’s G20, saying it had grown unwieldy. “The US would whittle the G20 down back to basics,” he said, adding that Pretoria’s summit had become “a G100”. He said the Miami meeting would be more “concentrated”.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki confirmed earlier this week that Trump had invited him to next year’s gathering.

Relations between Washington and Pretoria remain strained, with the tension affecting US participation during South Africa’s G20 presidency.

The United States is also set to host the 2026 G20 Summit in December at the same venue Trump had initially planned for the G7 meeting in 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
