Tragic buggy accident claims life of South African chef on Richard Branson’s Caribbean Island
A rising star in the culinary world, 37-year-old Sihle Somdaka’s life was tragically cut short late Friday night on Richard Branson’s private Caribbean island. The talented chef, known for his passion and culinary skills, suffered a fatal accident while operating an electric buggy, shortly after midnight.
Somdaka, a devoted father of two, was attending a farewell party at the island’s Great House when he decided to leave the festivities. As he navigated down a steep hill in one of the resort’s buggies, he lost control, leading to a devastating crash that resulted in a fatal head injury.
The Necker Island medic was immediately called to the scene, and the team member was supported with medical care including CPR. The medics continued to administer CPR all the way to Peebles hospital on Tortola, where they were transferred by boat.
Despite medical staff’s brave efforts to revive him, Somdaka was declared dead shortly after arrival. His passing has sent shockwaves through the culinary community and beyond, marking a profound loss for those who knew him.
A spokesperson from Virgin Limited Edition said: “It is with deepest sadness that we can confirm that one of our Necker Island team members, sadly passed away on Saturday August 30, 2025. They were a hugely talented and exceptional member of the Necker Island family, and we are all devastated by this news. Our utmost priority is the wellbeing of their family and friends, and that of our team, and we are doing everything we can to support them all during this very difficult time.”
Originally hailing from Cape Town, Somdaka had garnered experience in prestigious restaurants across Kuwait and Qatar before joining the team at Necker Island. His social media accounts reflected the excitement of his new life in the Caribbean, filled with vibrant photographs showcasing jet skis and stunning sunsets.
Sir Richard Branson, who was not present on the island at the time of the incident, expressed his deep sorrow in a statement, acknowledging the profound impact Somdaka had on his colleagues and the local community. He also conveyed his condolences to Somdaka’s grieving family, indicating that the loss is felt deeply by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
The British Virgin Islands police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and Virgin Limited Edition said it will work with the authorities to assist in the investigation.
As the investigation unfolds, tributes continue to pour in for Somdaka, a talented chef whose ambition and zest for life inspired many. He will be remembered not only for his culinary excellence but for the warmth and joy he brought into the lives of others.
