Six people, including four women, were shot and killed in separate incidents across Kraaifontein in Cape Town.

Police Spokesperson Novela Potelwa says they are probing three double murders and a case of attempted murder.

She says the motives for the attacks are unclear at this stage.

The area has been hard-hit by gang-related killings in recent months.

Meanwhile, Acting Police Minister, Prof Firoz Cachalia, says crime intelligence and detective services are two areas within policing that need further resourcing if South Africa is to win the battle against gangsterism and organised crime.

Speaking in Mfuleni on the Cape Flats, following community engagements in the area and in Mitchells Plain, Cachalia says, “The country is under siege by criminals, by gangs. They are the ones who are selling drugs, making a fortune. By the way, we are not dealing with smallanyana gangs anymore, we are dealing with people who are running big businesses, maybe top officials, which makes it even worse. These people are destroying our communities.”

The Acting Police Minister was accompanied by National Police Commissioner, Fanie Masemola and Deputy Justice Minister, Andries Nel.
