South Africans affected as Mitchum Deodorant is recalled – Here's why
Mitchum has confirmed that a number of its deodorant products have been recalled in South Africa, the UK, and Ireland following consumer complaints of temporary skin irritation.
The company said the issue was linked to its 48-hour 100ml roll-on, after some customers reported adverse reactions.
“Some of you told us that you have experienced temporary irritation after using selected batches of Mitchum 48-hour 100ml roll-on, sold in the UK, Ireland, and South Africa. We are sorry to those who were impacted and for the time it took to complete the investigation,” Mitchum said in a statement.
The manufacturer claimed that while the formula itself had not changed, a modification in the production process of one raw material had caused the problem.
“That change didn’t meet our standards, or yours. We’ve gone back to the original process to make sure current and future batches meet the high standards you expect from us,” the company said.
Mitchum stressed the issue was limited to a small number of batches, which can be identified by their batch numbers printed on the bottom of the packaging.
The company added that it is working to remove these products from shelves and has urged affected customers to contact its customer care team.
A number of South Africans have come forward and claimed that they experienced issues from using the roll-on.
“What do you mean ‘temporary irritation’ when my armpits had chemical burns, itched badly and have now turned black?” Asked a woman after seeing the statement.
Another claimed that she had to be rushed to the Emergency Room after experiencing side effects.
Legal expert Bonga Dlulisa said affected consumers may have grounds for legal action. “If it’s found that Mitchum did not comply with required manufacturing standards, and users can prove damages, a class action lawsuit could be possible,” he explained.
Dlulisa told IOL that there would be exhaustive search for proof that the individuals’ claims are factual before embarking on a possible class action lawsuit.
Mitchum confirmed it would compensate customers who were affected. “Yes, we are providing affected consumers with compensation. Please reach out to Mitchum Customer Care so we can make this right for you. You should expect a response from us within 72 hours,” the company said.
