Women break barriers in KwaZulu-Natal's Community Police Forum

Val Pillay and Esay Gounden, from the Phoenix Community Police Forum (CPF), have been appointed to the KwaZulu-Natal CPF Board, which was previously male-dominated.

They will be part of the resources and financial management sub-committee of the Treasury.

Pillay was elected the chairperson and public relations officer of Sector 2 in 2021, while Gounden was elected the vice-chairperson of Sector 3 earlier this year. They will continue their work in these positions within the Phoenix CPF.

“The CPF is a man’s world. We as women worked hard to move up the ranks and gain the positions that we have. Being appointed to this provincial position alongside Essay is amazing. It highlights women in leadership,” said Pillay.

She said she hoped more women joined the CPFs within their communities.

Gounden said: “It is exciting to be given this opportunity but it is also  daunting as a woman. As one of the two first women to be chosen, I feel honoured. We have not had our induction yet but we will work with finance and resources under the Treasury.”

She said women empowerment is important.

“The CPF is no longer just a man’s world. We have done a lot to make our mark in the community. I am passionate about my community and safety. There are many times where I will patrol the streets at night. Women are strong. We can only go up from here,” said Gounden.
