World Suicide Prevention Day: The importance of kindness and support
As World Suicide Prevention Day is observed on September 10, as a society, we need to be mindful to always be kind to others.
The day, which has been observed since 2003, is to bring about awareness and provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicide with various activities.
Suicide is a serious global public health issue, with over 700,000 lives lost each year.
The theme for this year is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’.
While we all may know someone who has died by suicide, we can also try a bit harder to assist those we think may be at risk.

Using these five steps could just be the lifeline someone needs:
- Ask: directly enquire by an individual about whether they may be thinking about suicide or self-harm.
- Be there: learn to listen without judgment, as those battling with these emotions do not find the conversation easy, and a willingness to listen could provide them comfort.
- Help them stay safe: Do not leave the individual alone. Try to reduce their access to harmful items or places where they would attempt suicide.
- Connect with professionals for help: there are many resources available, and helping to guide the individuals to these resources and ensuring they have the support is important.
- Follow up: Stay in touch even after the individual has reached out for help. Ongoing support is what they need and is crucial for mental health and their well-being.
If you or someone you know has thought of suicide, contact the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) at 0800 567 567 or SMS 31393.
