Davids delivers as Lions maul Boland

Angelo Davids’ four tries helped the Lions book their place in the Currie Cup final as they crushed the Boland Cavaliers at Ellis Park.

The Lions – packed with URC players – scored nine tries to claim a 67-19 win and secure a second consecutive domestic decider.

The hosts struck early, racing to a commanding lead through doubles from centre Henco van Wyk and former Stormers wing Davids.

Ex-Bulls flyhalf Chris Smith controlled matters from the tee, landing a penalty and three conversions to make it 29-0.

The onslaught continued when prop SJ Kotze latched onto an offload from Richard Kriel, stepped past James Tedder and dived over for the Lions’ fifth try. Smith added the extras to stretch the margin to 36-0.

Boland responded before the break, captain and hooker Sidney Tobias crashing over to get the visitors on the board.

But the Lions answered once more through Davids, who completed his hat-trick in style. Rising above the defence to collect a cross-kick from Smith, he finished brilliantly in the corner to cap a dominant half.

The Pride went into the change rooms with a 41-5 lead.

After the restart the Lions continued to pile on the pressure with Boland’s Tedder shown a yellow card before the hosts were awarded a penalty try. Davids crossed once again for his fourth of the match to take the hosts 53-5 ahead in the third quarter.

Boland winger Jayden Bantom crossed over for the visitors second of the match, before Springbok fullback Quan Horn got himself on the scoresheet, scoring the Lions eighth try of the match.

Replacement scrumhalf Chriswill September dotted down Boland’s third, but flanker Renzo de Plessis had the final say, adding a late score.

The Lions will face either the Cheetahs or Griquas who play in Kimberley on Saturday evening.
