US vetoes UN resolution calling for immediate ceasefire in Gaza – SABC News
The United States of America has yet again vetoed a United Nations Security Council draft resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
The elected 10 members of the Council put forward the text, which received 14 votes in favour, including 4 of the 5 permanent members with veto power.
But it was the US that cast its sixth veto over the almost two-year war between Israel and Hamas.
The text demanded not only a permanent ceasefire but recalled earlier demands for the immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups and further demanded that the Government of Israel unconditionally lift all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
The US Representative called the draft unacceptable, accusing the Council of a performative action designed to draw a veto, arguing that the draft resolution would provide Hamas with a lifeline while continuing to insist that Israel had the right to defend itself.
The latest vote demonstrated the growing isolation of the United States and Israel in relation to ending the catastrophe unfolding in Gaza.
