Brazil joins SA’s genocide case against Israel at ICJ – SABC News
As the situation continues to worsen in Gaza, Brazil has announced that it will join South Africa in its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
South Africa is accusing Israel of committing a genocide in the Gaza Strip. Scores of people have died in the enclave since the conflict escalated when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th, 2023.
Brazil has invoked Article 63 of the Statute of the ICJ and filed in the registry of the court a declaration of intervention in the case.
The ICJ case has been one of the sources of tension between South Africa and the United States of America. Brazil has availed itself, and it relies on its status as a party to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Brazil has also been under immense pressure after former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is an ally of US President Donald Trump, was incarcerated.
The Latin American nation has been outspoken about the untenable situation in Gaza; it has called on Israel to stop its military offensive in the besieged enclave and supported Palestine’s right to self-determination.
