The Department of Correctional Services says it is revamping its approach to managing the parole system, with a focus on legislation, policy, strategy, planning, and operations.

This follows the conclusion of the two-day National Parole Review Summit held at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility in Pretoria.

Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale outlined the department’s plans, saying the initiatives are set to be completed by May 2027, with the aim of creating a more effective and just parole system.

“There was a mention of reviewing the policy document or the draft reform document. Those are actions that needs to be implemented immediately. There’s an issue about the MOU between the Department of Correctional Services and the Department of Social Development. That is a task that we cannot say should wait longer than the timeframe that has been indicated.”
