Madlanga Commission | Mchunu said Ramaphosa backed disbanding of Political Killings Task Team: Masemola
National Police Commissioner, Fannie Masemola, revealed that Minister Senzo Mchunu told him that President Cyril Ramaphosa had agreed to the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) being disbanded immediately.
Masemola told the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday that Masemola said Mchunu told him this during a March 27, 2025 meeting they held to discuss the work and progress of the PKTT into political murders.
“He said that the president is in agreement that the PTT be disbanded,” Masemola testified.
“I was quite taken aback by his relevance since it was the president who, knowing about the effectiveness of the PKTT, had requested the PKTT to deploy to assist with the cases, murders and investigations.”
Masemola added that in their previous engagement, Ramaphosa had expressed satisfaction with the PKTT’s performance.
However, when asked whether Mchunu’s claim could be trusted, Masemola openly questioned its accuracy.
“Yes, I do have reasons [why this can be contradictory] because when I briefed the president on February 1, he was quite surprised.
“He was quite taken aback when I briefed him that this team is being disbanded and with no reasons given and he was quite taken aback and he said he will speak to the minister.”
Mchunu issued a letter to Masemola on December 31, calling for the immediate disbandment of the PKTT.
IOL reported on Monday that Masemola had asked Ramaphosa to intervene but heard nothing back from the president, nor did he follow up on his request.
“I did speak to the president,” Masemola said.
“The president met with the minister, but I was never given feedback. I didn’t follow up. I couldn’t take my own minister to court. There was no other avenue.”
