Manie, Kwagga expect big Los Pumas challenge
Springbok flyhalf Manie Libbok and loose forward Kwagga Smith are bracing for massive battles against Argentina at Kings Park in Durban on Saturday.
The teams will meet again at Twickenham in London next Saturday in the closing match of the Rugby Championship – a fixture that could yet decide the title, depending on this weekend’s results.
For now, both Libbok and Smith are fully focused on doing what’s required to keep the Boks in the hunt to defend the crown they reclaimed last year, with all four teams still in contention.
KEO: Unpacking the potency of Contepomi’s Los Pumas
“Many of their players have sevens backgrounds,” said Libbok on Wednesday, zoning in on Argentina’s backs. “They’re quick, agile, and have great skill sets, so we know we have a big challenge this weekend.
“They’re also very good in the aerial battle, which is an area we pride ourselves on, so that will be a key contest.”
KRAPPIE: Bok coaches make you believe
Smith was equally complimentary about the Pumas loose trio.
“They have very mobile loose forwards who get around the park, and they’re good at winning turnovers. Their pack is also physical in general, and they play hard rugby, so they’ll challenge us there this weekend.
“They’ve grown a lot over the last few years, with a good balance between senior and younger players, which makes them very strong.”
RASSIE: Boks won’t chase bonus point
Reflecting on the part he played in the Boks’ record 43-10 victory against the All Blacks in Wellington, Libbok said: “It was good to come off the bench and fulfil the role expected of me. We took a lot of confidence from how we trained that week, and it was great to see everything come together in the second half.
“Handré [Pollard], Sacha [Feinberg-Mngomezulu] and I push each other really hard, and that brings the best out of all of us. I’ve put a lot of work into my goal-kicking, and it’s good to see that pay off. I’ll keep working at it and always give my best.”
