Madlanga Commission urged to focus on SAPS legislative framework – SABC News

Head of the Police Legal Services Major General Petronella Van Rooyen has urged the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria to focus on the legal aspects and implications of political interference in South African Police Service (SAPS).

General Van Rooyen says this will help minimize political interference in future.

Her comments come as Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has been accused of political interference in disbanding the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team, a decision that the commission has heard was not in his jurisdiction.

Van Rooyen who was testifying as the third witness on Thursday, has concluded her testimony and the hearings have been adjourned until Friday.

“The implications of political interference and specifically relating to where does the role of the minister stop and where does the role of the national commissioner start and to bring clarity. I said earlier, not only for the national commissioner and the minister but also for the organisation as a whole to ensure that there is clarity on the role of each role player,” adds Van Rooyen.
