Wilco Louw is regarded as one of the world’s best scrummagers, but the Springbok strongman admits there’s an area of his game in which he can improve.

The 31-year-old made a big impact at the set piece against the All Blacks after coming off the bench in Auckland and Wellington.

Louw will again be called upon in that role to inflict some pain at scrum time in Saturday’s crucial Rugby Championship match against Argentina in Durban.

Mobility around the park – especially in the early stages – has been highlighted by coach Rassie Erasmus as the main reason why Thomas du Toit has been preferred as the starting tighthead, which Louw understands.

“Thomas has been playing really well and is getting around the park. Coming off the bench, I know I have a specific role to play. My first job is to scrum and to maul.

“I’m excited to get another opportunity to play. We’ve all got our roles and, firstly, we want to get dominance in the set piece.”

Louw admitted he had room for improvement.

“There’s definitely a lot more to work on. I don’t think there’s a prop in the world that doesn’t want to be more mobile,” the 22-Test heavy said.

Louw has signed a long-term deal to rejoin the Stormers ahead of the 2026-27 season, but will see out the upcoming Vodacom URC campaign with the Bulls before heading home.

The former Toulon and Harlequins man credits being back in South Africa as a major factor for the improvement in his game.

“Being in a South African coaching system and playing in a South African team like the Bulls is great. The Bulls have an amazing pack and you play with guys like Gerhard Steenekamp and Johan Grobbelaar and all the boys. I’ve been enjoying my rugby.”
