Rapture on hold: Mahlatse Letoka says God is giving the world 'more prep time'

A trainee accountant at KPMG South Africa who triggered a global debate by warning colleagues of an impending ‘rapture’ has spoken publicly for the first time since her prediction failed to materialise.

Mahlatse Letoka, whose mass internal email claimed the biblical event would occur between September 23 and 24, broke her silence this week after the forecasted date passed without incident.

In a message shared on social media, Letoka sought to clarify her stance.

“Please note that the Notes on the Gospel of Jesus Christ book is not about the date of the rapture at all,” she posted. “The rapture is still very much approaching and let us be grateful for the delay, as it’s an opportunity to keep preparing. God is faithful.”

Letoka’s initial message, circulated to staff across the firm, urged recipients to “repent and prepare” for the end times. Screenshots of the email were widely shared on social media, sparking both ridicule and concern, and drawing international media coverage.

In the email, she wrote: “Please save the attached PDF quickly before it’s too late. I am a servant of Jesus Christ, and I rather get fired than watch my colleagues go through this. Listen, World War 3 is coming, and this entire economy is about to collapse (New York is likely to go down first).

“Jesus will take the Christians who are ready (filled with the Holy Spirit and prayed up) between 23-24 September 2025 (Feast of Trumpets) – this is what no one knows the day, or hour means (these ready Christians are not taken by aliens). This is the ‘Rapture‘.”

Another South African self-styled ‘messenger’, Joshua Mhlakela, also ignited worldwide debate by prophesising the rapture.

Mhlakela first made the prediction during an interview on the YouTube channel CettwinzTV, where he said he had received a divine vision.

According to Mhlakela, he saw Jesus sitting on His throne and heard the words: “I am coming soon. I will come back to the Earth.”
