Joe Schmidt says the Wallabies will have to lick their wounds and get psyched up once again ahead of the second Bledisloe Cup Test in Perth.

Schmidt says they’ve left Eden Park “gutted” after their brave fightback came up short in a 33-24 defeat to the All Blacks on Saturday.

Australia trailed by just two points with 10 minutes remaining, but Cam Roigard’s late try sealed another Bledisloe Cup triumph for New Zealand, who extended their stranglehold on the trophy for a 24th year.

“I’m proud of the way we stayed in the fight,” Schmidt told Stan Sport. “I thought, two points in it with 10 to go, we were right in the fight.

“When we got our chances we didn’t quite find touch with a couple of them which are our access points. But we put a couple of really good attacks together and a great driving maul to get to within two points and they were the positives so we’ve got to keep building on them.

“The negatives, we’ve just got to look back at some of those penalties because they were what really hurt us. They [the Wallabies] really wanted it and they’re pretty gutted they didn’t get it.”

The Wallabies were pinged 14 times by referee Andrea Piardi, with several contentious calls stalling their momentum.

Piardi had already come under scrutiny earlier this year for his handling of the second Lions Test at the MCG.
