All Blacks lose backline star

The All Blacks will be without one of their most experienced backs for Saturday’s Rugby Championship rematch against Australia in Perth.

Beauden Barrett left the field in the first half of the All Blacks’ 33-24 win in Auckland, which secured the Bledisloe Cup for another year and kept Scott Robertson’s side in the title race.

The 33-year-old, capped 141 times, suffered a shoulder injury that not only sidelines him for Perth but also casts doubt on his involvement in next month’s northern hemisphere tour.

ARDIE: All Blacks restored some mana

Assistant coach Jason Ryan confirmed Damian McKenzie is likely to wear the No 10 jersey after replacing Barrett off the bench at Eden Park.

But the injury list doesn’t stop there, with prop Ethan de Groot ruled out after a failed head injury assessment, while wing Caleb Clarke (ankle) and lock Tupou Vaa’i (knee) remain doubtful.

“We’ve got a few bodies we need to look after,” Ryan admitted. “And it’s an opportunity to look at everyone in our squad too, potentially. We’ve got to go up a notch because what we’re learning in second Tests is that everyone gets better.”

Across the Tasman, Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies will be bolstered by the return of giant lock Will Skelton, back from club duty with La Rochelle, and dynamic loose forward Rob Valetini, who has recovered from a calf injury.

Meanwhile, the Wallabies’ scrumhalf stocks remain under pressure. Retired No 9 Nic White has rejoined the squad in Perth to “help them prepare”, but could be thrust back into action after Tate McDermott suffered a hamstring injury and doubts linger over Jake Gordon’s fitness.

If White does play, it would be the second time in two months the 35-year-old has come out of retirement, having already answered an SOS for the Rugby Championship after the British & Irish Lions series.
