Minister should not oversee police operations: Prof. Gumede – SABC News
Associate Professor at the Wits School of Governance William Gumede says the job description of the Police Minister as a political head has nothing to do with overseeing police operations.
Mkhwanazi has accused senior police officials including Mchunu of being corrupt and having links to crime syndicates.
Gumede says there should have been dialogue between the Minister and those responsible for police operations.
“If you are a minister, you are a political person. What you need to do then is to call in you know the heads of the police and then you raise the issues that need to be raised. The Minister cannot go into the office and go and instruct people what to do. That’s just totally not how governments work.”
Meanwhile, the Ad Hoc Committee set up to investigate allegations made by Mkhwanazi met on Friday afternoon as it prepares to start hearings on the 7th of October.
Professor Ntsikelelo Breakfast, Acting Director of the Center for Security, Peace and Conflict Resolution at Nelson Mandela University shares more on what the committee discussed:
