Malema firearm case judgement reading to continue tomorrow – SABC News

The judgment in the case against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, and his former bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman, has been rolled over to Tuesday for conclusion.

Magistrate Twanette Olivier spent the entire day reviewing testimonies from state witnesses and is expected to conclude and hand down judgment on Tuesday.

Malema is accused of discharging a firearm during the party’s 5th anniversary celebrations in Mdantsane in 2018.

Snyman is facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The case was lodged by lobby group AfriForum,

Earlier, AfriForum said that it’s hoping for a guilty verdict in the case.

Chief Spokesperson for AfriForum Community Safety, Jacques Broodryk, says, “I would hope that should they be found guilty, we see a heavy sentence that sends a clear message (that) the politicians cannot do what they want to and get away with it. Unfortunately, in South Africa, we’ve seen a culture of this developing. If we look at things like the Zondo Commission’s report, for instance, that implicated scores of politicians, but nothing has been (done) to prosecute those people and that causes more and more politicians to start thinking that they can get away with what they want to. We see that the general public is losing faith in the criminal justice system which can lead to all sorts of problems,” says AfriForum.
