The South African Weather Service’s (SAWS) seasonal forecast reveals that the forthcoming summer season will mostly be hotter than normal and compounded by rainfall patterns that are likely to favour above-normal rainfall.

The Weather Service says these conditions could pose public health risks and the occurrence of natural disasters, especially flooding.

The service’s Spokesperson Hannelee Doubell addressed the National Press Club’s media briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday.

Doubell says, “During this expected season all indications are for the rainfall conditions to be better towards the mid-summer season. Especially the central parts where quite high probabilities of the above normal rainfall is predicted.”

She says, “It is still important to follow the monthly updates. We are at the start. Still at spring now. It is very important to keep monitoring the condition, but at the moment be prepared to quite a high likelihood of above normal rainfall. Especially for the mid-summer season over central interior parts of the country.”
