WATCH LIVE | Malema back in court for judgment in firearm case
EFF leader Julius Malema is back in the dock of the East London Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for the continuation of judgment in his long-running firearm discharge case.
Day one of the verdict on Monday stretched late into the afternoon, with magistrate Twanet Olivier going through the evidence in a painstaking manner. With time running out, she rolled the judgment to Tuesday.
Malema, alongside his former bodyguard Adriaan Snyman, faces charges under the Firearms Control Act.
The case dates back to July 2018 when video footage at the EFF’s fifth birthday rally in Mdantsane appeared to show Snyman handing Malema a rifle.
He then allegedly fired into the air at the packed Sisa Dukashe Stadium.
The courtroom is again filled with red-shirted EFF supporters.
Malema and Snyman sit quietly in the dock as proceedings resume.
The state argued that the gunfire put thousands of people at risk, while the defence maintains the firearm was a prop loaded with blanks.
Both men pleaded not guilty and previously tried to have the charges dropped, but the application was dismissed.
