Former Correctional Services Deputy Minister Makwetla in court over BOSASA fraud allegations – SABC News

Former Deputy Minister of Correctional Services Thabang Makwetla, who reportedly received R350 000 worth of security upgrades to his home by BOSASA in 2015, briefly appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Makwetla is facing charges relating to the contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act and fraud.

According to the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, Makwetla’s court appearance comes after his arrest by the IDAC following his failure to disclose the material benefit to Parliament over a period of four years.

“These charges emanate from the alleged security upgrade to his home by BOSASA in 2015 and valued at approximately R350 000. He allegedly failed to disclose this material benefit to Parliament over a period of four years and he violated his legal and ethical duty under the members’ code. The court granted him R10 000 bail and his matter was postponed to 4 November 2025 for the disclosure of the docket and other documents that are required for the preparation of the trial.”
