Former deputy minister Thabang Makwetla faces court over BOSASA corruption allegations

The former Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla, has appeared before the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court after his arrest by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).

Makwetla faces serious charges related to the contravention of the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA) and fraud.

The allegations come from an alleged security upgrade to Makwetla’s private home carried out by BOSASA in 2015. This material benefit is believed to be valued at approximately R350,000.

The charges relate to the former Deputy Minister’s alleged failure to disclose this benefit to Parliament.

According to the charges, Makwetla repeatedly failed to disclose the upgrade over a period of four years.

The failure to disclose the R350,000 alleged benefit is cited as a violation of his legal and ethical duty as defined under the Members of Parliament Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests.

Following his court appearance, Makwetla was granted R10,000 bail.

His matter has been postponed, and the next court date has been scheduled for November 4 2025.
