Grieving families of Nathi Mthethwa and his wife Philisiwe Buthelezi appreciate outpouring of support

The family of the late South African Ambassador to France, Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa, and the family of his wife Philisiwe Buthelezi, have expressed deep gratitude for the national and international support they have received following his passing in Paris this week.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, the Mthethwa and Buthelezi families said the outpouring of condolences had brought comfort in their grief.

“The passing of our beloved Nathi — a devoted husband, father, brother, and South African Ambassador to Paris — has left a void beyond words. Yet your messages of condolence have brought comfort in our grief, reminding us that we are not alone,” the family said.

They extended special thanks to the South African government for its support and to French authorities for their cooperation as investigations into Mthethwa’s death continue.

“We are especially thankful to the government of the Republic of South Africa for its unwavering support, and to the French authorities for their ongoing cooperation and transparency as the investigation unfolds,” the statement read.

The families also acknowledged the compassion shown by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola and his deputies, as well as Cabinet ministers and the ANC’s National Executive Committee.

“Their compassion, guidance, and dignified leadership have been a source of strength for our family,” said family spokesperson Dr Sfiso Buthelezi.

The families said they would work with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) to bring Mthethwa’s remains home.

“Once formal processes are complete, we will work closely with Dirco to bring Nathi home for a memorial and funeral worthy of his legacy.”

Mthethwa, 58, a former cabinet minister and long-serving ANC leader, was found dead at a Paris hotel on Tuesday. French authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death.

“As we await further clarity, we take solace in the unity and compassion shown by South Africans from all walks of life — mourning with us, honouring Nathi’s memory, and recognising his lifelong service to our nation,” the grieving families said.
