Severe thunderstorms and weather warnings issued for Gauteng and Mpumalanga
The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga on Monday.
The forecaster said severe thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon with rainfall expected to accumulate in the region of 15-20mm per hour.
“Strong winds are expected in places,” Saws warned.
A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds has also been issued for the extreme eastern parts of the Free State, as well as the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
“This will lead to damage of settlements and infrastructure. Some transport routes and travel services will also be affected by the wind. There is also a risk of localised runaway fires and danger to life,” Saws said.
There is a warning for damaging waves along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and East London from the afternoon. For this, a Yellow Level 1 warning has been issued.
Meanwhile, a high fire danger warning has been issued for the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape as well as the extreme western parts of the North West.
Looking ahead, Saws is predicting isolated scattered showers and thunderstorms over the central and eastern parts of South Africa, with possible severe thunderstorms and damaging winds over the southern interior of KZN. There will also be destructive waves along the south coast.
