Colleen Makhubele not in the running: MK Party hints at shocking mayoral choice
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has dismissed claims that they were considering to field the former Johannesburg Council Speaker, Colleen Makhubele, as the party’s mayoral candidate.
Speaking to IOL, MKP spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, said that they were far from even selecting candidates for the job, adding that they will shock everyone once they announce.
He said they were still assessing candidates who would be able to take up the role.
“We are far from that and we are not going to rush the hype of political parties for their candidate. We are not rushing. We do a proper assessment and shock everybody,” he said.
This is as political parties are announcing their candidates for the mayoral seat in preparation for the 2026 local government elections.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has announced the party’s federal chairperson, Helen Zille, as its mayoral candidate in the City of Johannesburg.
ActionSA previously told IOL that it has not yet decided on who will be its mayoral candidate for Joburg, but the party was not ruling out the return of former mayor Herman Mashaba.
However, the party has announced an anti-crime activist and TV presenter, Xolani Khumalo, as its mayoral candidate for the City of Ekurhuleni.
The ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, said that the ANC was not in a rush to announce its public representatives for the top positions.
Meanwhile, Build One SA (BOSA), the GOOD, Party and RISE Mzansi have announced a joint political party, named Unite for Change to challenge the political status quo ahead of the upcoming elections.
Unite for Change promised “one name, one platform, and one purpose,” and will contest the next municipal elections as a unified movement.
