NPA to oppose Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala’s bail denial appeal – SABC News

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it will oppose businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala application to seek leave to appeal the decision of the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg to deny him bail.

Matlala was denied bail last month after he failed to convince the court that he was neither a flight risk and nor a danger to society.

He and four others made a brief court appearance and the matter was postponed to November 11 to allow the NPA to centralise charges from two other separate matters.

They are accused of orchestrating the failed assassination of Matlala’s former partner, socialite Tebogo Thobejane in October 2023.

NPA Spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane says, “We can confirm as the NPA that we received the motion. He intends to appeal the decision of the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court that denied him bail and furthermore, as the state, we can indicate that we are in the process of preparing ourselves to oppose his application.”

Mjonondwane says, “We believe that this court was not misdirected, whether in law or factually. So, we will be opposing his application, however, we are still awaiting a date for the set down of that hearing.”
