Alexandra residents demand local police station commander step down – SABC News

Some residents in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, have staged a march outside the local police station, demanding the station commander to step down.
This follows numerous killings involving gun violence in area.
One of the patrollers was shot and killed by unknown suspects earlier this week. The incident sparked an outrage as the victim was one of the top residents in fighting crime in the area.
One of the march organisers, Thato Mashaba says the police in the area are failing to fight crime.
“I once got robbed, going to work, just after leaving my house. And when we called the police, it took them forever to respond to that emergency. My sister once got raped, it took them two years to arrest the perpetrator and six months for him be in jail, only for him to go back to the streets and do the same thing to other people. Every night when I go to sleep, I hear gunshots. So, we just want change, they should act.”
