‘They called us terrorists’ – Mandla Mandela recounts Israeli detention of SA activists
The six activists abducted by Israeli forces from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) landed at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday morning, ending days of uncertainty and diplomatic pressure.
Nkosi Zwelivelile ‘Mandla’ Mandela, Zukiswa Wanner, Carrie Shelver, Zaheera Soomar, Dr Fatima Hendricks, and Reaz Moola received a rapturous welcome.
They appeared emotional as they hugged loved ones.
A teary-eyed Mandela acknowledged those whose work was behind ensuring that the activists boarded the GSF.
“With the assistance of our donors, we were able to procure a €150,000 (R2,997,915) boat. It was important as South Africans to be part of this mission because we are a country born of resistance,” Mandela said.
He said the activists anticipated two scenarios: entering Gaza or being intercepted by Israel.

“We were intercepted in international waters, which is a violation of maritime law. We were detained by Apartheid Israel’s navy and taken to Ashdod. We were denied food. Upon arrival, we realised there will never be justice on stolen land.
“Our hands were tied behind our backs; we were paraded for all the Israelis and their allies in the West to see. In the midst of that, the Israelis sent their best at us.”
The chief said Israel’s Minister of National Security came and shouted at them: “You support baby killers and call us terrorists!”
He went on to say that they did not sign documents stating that they entered Israel illegally, and as a result, they were detained longer by Israel.
At O.R. Tambo International Airport this morning, supporters and family members had gathered, holding placards reading ‘Free Palestine’ and waving Palestinian flags.
Among them were relatives who had waited anxiously, many clutching photos and banners, chanting slogans of solidarity.
“Up the liberation. Down the occupation! Free Palestine. The people united shall never be divided. The people united shall never be defeated,” they chanted.
