Woman reported missing in South Korea found safe, says family
A South African woman who was reported missing in Seoul, South Korea, has been found safe.
The family of 25-year-old Shavishka Maharaj told Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) that they were unable to contact their daughter.
According to RUSA boss Prem Balram, her family was concerned after unknown males answered her mobile phone during a wellness check.
He said Maharaj has not been heard from since Tuesday night.
He said she relocated to Itaewon in Seoul from Pietermaritzburg in June 2025 to teach English at Chungdam School in South Korea.
She is also a Medical Student at Albert Luthuli in KZN.
Balram said the man who answered her phone barely spoke English but provided an alternate number with a +257 prefix for Burundi, East Africa.
There is currently a week-long holiday in Korea called Chuseok.
A relative, Logan Naidoo, told IOL News on Wednesday morning that Maharaj has been found safe and that she had lost her phone.
He thanked everyone for their concern.
