Itoje hails Farrell’s Saracens return

Maro Itoje says Owen Farrell has slotted seamlessly back into life at Saracens, describing the England veteran’s return as a massive boost for the Premiership giants.

Farrell rejoined the North London club after a season in France with Racing 92, where he spent one campaign in the Top 14 before heading home. The 34-year-old has wasted no time reminding fans of his class, steering Saracens to early-season wins over Newcastle Red Bulls and Bristol Bears.

ANDY FARRELL: Owen broke down in tears

According to Itoje, having Farrell back in the mix has already lifted the standards within the squad.

“Owen brings that edge and drive that’s been a part of Saracens for as long as I’ve been here,” said Itoje.

“He sets the tone in training and in games – his competitiveness, his preparation, his attention to detail – those things rub off on everyone.”

Farrell has worn the No 10 jersey in both league outings and delivered two commanding displays, quickly re-establishing himself as the club’s on-field general. Itoje said the transition had been effortless.

“It’s like he never left. He knows the system, he knows the players, and the players know him. It just feels right having him back.”

Farrell’s return also comes at a time when Saracens are intent on reclaiming their Premiership dominance after falling well short last season, and Itoje believes Farrell’s influence could prove decisive.

“Having someone of Owen’s experience and mentality is invaluable. He raises standards and pushes everyone to be better. That’s the Saracens way.”
