SAMWU threatens to disrupt G20 Summit over Tshwane dispute – SABC News

The trade union South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) has threatened to disrupt the G20 Summit in Johannesburg next month if the City of Tshwane’s issues are not resolved.

The union is demanding the implementation of salary increases that were agreed upon with the city during national collective bargaining.

SAMWU says it’s mobilising support from other unions for a mass demonstration if its grievances are not resolved.

SAMWU’s regional secretary Donald Monakisi says they will bring the city to a standstill.

“When they were supposed to implement the 3.5 in 2021, they said that the city doesn’t have the financial muscle to effect such increases. So it’s in 2023 when they were supposed to effect the 5.4, they then cited the same reasons that the city is bankrupt. In the three weeks or so, we saw them granting themselves a 5-per-cent increase with a back pay of almost 12 months. So what we are saying is we are bringing all shop stewards of Gauteng as of next month to make sure that we bring this event to a standstill.”
