SARS makes Montana’s tax records public – SABC News
The South African Revenue Services (SARS) has released former Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) CEO Lucky Montana’s tax records to the public, in a media briefing in Pretoria.
SARS says it has acted within the legal prescriptions of the Tax Administration Act, which empowers the revenue service to disclose tax details of a taxpayer, to protect and defend the integrity of the tax system, if indeed false information has been peddled.
SARS Spokesperson Siphithi Sibeko says this was necessary following Montana’s allegations against the public entity.
Sibeko says, “We afforded Mr. Montana the opportunity to withdraw his statement, which indeed harmed the integrity and the professionalism that SARS executes its work with. So we had no choice but to go this route. It’s unfortunate, but indeed SARS had no other option but to explore this option.”
