Ad Hoc Committee members urged to take their work seriously – SABC News
As the Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system is preparing for day five hearings on Monday, the Activists and Citizens Forum is cautioning members serving on it not to veer-off from its mandate.
The committee was set up to look into concerns of national security following a media briefing by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July.
The Forum is urging MPs serving on the committee to up their game.
It has expressed extreme disappointment with their performance saying instead of asking relevant questions in line with the subject, they are busy with party political finger-pointing wanting to score cheap political points.
The Forum’s Spokesperson Dennis Bloem says, “It is very clear that these MPs don’t have a clue of their mandate. They are more interested in television cameras and playing for the gallery. We really don’t know what kind of report this committee will produce. We are calling upon members of Parliament to take their work seriously.”
The third witness will be the suspended Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Shadrack Sibiya. He assured the committee that he will be present when his turn to testify comes.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola was questioned about the police raid at Sibiya’s home.
“When I got the brief that is exactly what I was told that they were looking for gadgets, not for arresting people but were looking for gadgets.”
He was accused of exposing the country to criminality and not standing up for South Africans.
Political parties wanted to know why he followed the instruction of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
Thereby making him, complicit in the bigger role criminal syndicates, along with some political heads, play in the country.
Masemola says, “I could have done better, in hindsight, if you were in my position, the team is still there, I might not have done it the way you would, but I did it my way.”
