Cachalia concerned that corruption in SA threatens national security – SABC News
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia says corruption is a serious threat to national security. He says it is deeply enshrined in institutions and political structures in the country.
Cachalia’s statements come as the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and a Parliamentary Ad Hoc committee investigate allegations of corruption among senior police officials and the infiltration of the justice system.
He was speaking at the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation‘s Annual Inclusive Growth Forum in the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We have proposed the establishment of a new constitutionally compliant, multifunctional anti-corruption agency, building on the SIU into what we call the Office of Public Integrity. It will have powers to investigate systematic corruption, to make binding recommendations, and where it uncovers evidence of criminal conduct, to complete the docket.”
