V&A Waterfront set to ease traffic congestion ahead of festive season
Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront is set to ease traffic congestion for visitors ahead of the festive season, with sections of roads currently under construction set to reopen from the end of this week.
The move comes as part of efforts to improve visitor access during one of the busiest periods of the year.
Head of PR & Communications at the V&A Waterfront, Donald Kau, says reopened sections will include lanes along Dock Road, key traffic circles, and entry points from the Green Point Stadium side, all aimed at ensuring a smoother flow of vehicles and pedestrians.
“We aim to allow visitors to move around more freely during our busiest time. Key traffic circles will start reopening from the end of this week,” said Kau.
Kau said the decision also takes into account major upcoming events, including the Cape Town Marathon and the Red Bull Flugtag in November.
“By then, all lanes and traffic circles will be fully operational,” he said.
While the festive period will see the Waterfront fully accessible, construction work is set to resume in early 2026.
The next phase will focus on replacing bulk infrastructure from Ebenezer Circle to the Portswood Parking area, opposite the Two Oceans Aquarium and The Watershed.
This stage of the project is expected to cause temporary traffic slowdowns along Dock Road between January 12 and June 2026.
“We apologise to our visitors for any inconvenience; however, these upgrades are essential to ensure we continue to offer a world-class experience for our residents and visitors,” Kau added.
The V&A Waterfront’s infrastructure upgrade forms part of its long-term plan to modernise essential systems while maintaining accessibility and convenience for millions of annual visitors.
