The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has resuscitated its campaign to dismantle the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) by filing a motion of no confidence against KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli.

The Office of the Speaker Nontembeko Boyce confirmed receiving the motion, saying it will be processed accordingly.

Bonginkosi Mngadi, the MKP Chief Whip in the provincial legislature, said he was locked in a meeting and was not able to speak.

Speaking on the sidelines of a provincial government meeting on Tuesday in Durban, Ntuli said he was not scared of the motion and said his party will deal with it in the legislature.

He said the GPU, under his leadership, is stable and the province registered economic growth of 0.28%.

“There is stability in the province.

“We are winning the fight against crime and our province is the only one that registered economic growth in the last quarter so we think it is just craziness for the MKP to file a motion of no confidence while we have brought stability in the province. I think the motion was unnecessary,” said Ntuli.

The MKP is hoping to take advantage of apparent sour relations between the ANC and the IFP following the ousting of the ANC-led Umkhanyakude District Municipality mayor Siphile Mdaka by the IFP two weeks ago,

ANC provincial coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu refused to say whether his party will support Ntuli or not, adding that no party has approached his organisation and their the leadership has not looked into the matter.

“We have been made aware of the motion against the Premier, however, since there is no party that has approached us, we have not yet taken any position on the matter,” said Mabuyakhulu.

The MKP motion comes while the ANC Youth League in the province is pushing its mother body to leave the GPU.

The Youth League’s call was prompted by the ousting of the ANC in Umkhanyakude. The Youth League argued that the GPU has become an impediment and a threat to the ANC’s identity, claiming the GPU was targeting the ANC-led departments and municipalities.

In the 80-seat chamber, the GPU is made up of 41 seats from the IFP (15), ANC(14), DA (11), NFP (1) against the MKP (37) and EFF (2).

EFF provincial secretary Vukani Ndlovu indicated that his party may support the motion, saying it is not happy with how Ntuli has handled the allegations of corruption in ANC-led departments.

“Although the MKP has not approached us, we are listening to what they say and we will support any move that will benefit the people of the province because the GPU has failed to do that,” said Ndlovu.
