Police near final step in rolling out body ameras for officers – SABC News
The government and the police are in the final stages of implementing the use of body cameras for officers. That’s according to Acting Deputy National Police Commissioner Lineo Nkhuoa.
Nkhuoa says the budget for the purchase has been approved and allocated for the current financial year.
She announced at a graduation ceremony for the first group of officers who had completed a new course by the Safety and Security SETA in Durban.
The police plan to buy 100 cameras each year, which cost R29,000 each.
Nkhuoa has encouraged the officers to embrace technology in policing.
“We need technology to assist in fighting crime. We know nowadays we are faced with cybercrimes and many other crimes that require technology to fight them. We really need police officers who can use technology to fight crime. I know that our division’s technology management they are finalising those specifications so that those body cam can be procured. So, we are hopeful that before the end of this financial year, we will have procured the body cameras,” he says.
