Sibiya says he played no role in contamination of Meyiwa murder scene – SABC News

Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lt-General Shadrack Sibiya, has placed it on the record in Parliament today that he played no role in the alleged contamination of the murder scene of the late Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Sibiya was back in Parliament to continue with his version of events to the Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

MPs probed him on his role in the disbanding of the Political Killings Task Team, his alleged relationships with controversial figures as well as his alleged involvement in political interference in the South African Police Service.

But Sibiya was slightly side-tracked, when Meyiwa’s 2014 murder was raised.

It was ironic that Sibiya would open up and spend some time on this specific topic as the question was posed to him by MKP MP, David Skosana.

Sibiya had earlier indicated that he was uncomfortable taking questions from Skosana, because the MP had opened a case of obstruction of justice against him following the July allegations by Mkhwanazi.

Sibiya says he believes Skosana and Mkhwanazi are in cahoots.

“To me he is deeply involved, and it’s unfair,” says Sibiya.

It was agreed that Skosana would go ahead with his questions, and that Sibiya would have the choice to respond. Skosana started off with questions around the disbanding of the PKTT, but then he changed his line of questioning.

“Did you go to the Senzo Meyiwa scene?” Skosana asks.

Sibiya was the head of the Hawks at the time of the murder, and he took this opportunity to speak directly to South Africans and clear up rumours about him being involved in the alleged contamination of the scene and tampering with evidence.

“I went to the house to start the investigation, it was packed, lots of movement. I am very well trained, I preserved the scene, cordoned off. I just want to say I am not involved,” says Sibiya.

The crux of the questions today, of course, dealt with allegations made against Sibiya, by Mkhwanazi in July.

Sibiya has disputed many of the allegations against him, including his role in the winding down of the PKTT as well as the nature of his relationship with controversial businessmen, Brown Mogotsi and Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

On day one of his testimony, Sibiya glossed over his dealings with Mogotsi.

But MPs probed him on a phone call Mogotsi made to Sibiya, in which he gave Sibiya a heads up about forces within the SAPS who were working against him.

The ANC’s Xola Nqola found this conversation peculiar, expressing concern about how Mogotsi had come about that information.

“Are you not concerned when intel is being leaked and spread in communities?” Nqola asks.

“Of course, I am concerned. What did I do with the info, I used it to my advantage for my own survival,” Sibiya answers.

MPs from all parties have indicated that they are keen to interrogate Sibiya over his timeline of events.
