Celebrate the Festival of Lights with 5km Diwali Fun Run/Walk

JOIN the POST, the India South Africa Chamber of Commerce and the North Coast Diwali Celebrations Committee, for the third annual 5km Diwali Fun Run/Walk at Mount Edgecombe this October 18.

With prizes worth R15 000 up for grabs, entertainment, food stalls and a fireworks display, this community celebration of the Festival of Lights promises fun for the whole family.

The run/walk will commence from the Siphosethu Road grounds in Mount Edgecombe at 6.30am. Registration starts at 6am.

Yogas Nair, the editor of POST and POST Plus, said the collaboration with major sponsors such as ISACC was a welcomed move for this year’s bigger and better event.

“As the voice and heart of the community, this event is close to our hearts and what better festival than Diwali to bring communities together.”

Nair said last year’s event saw close to 300 entries.

“This year we are hoping to double that number. We invite residents of Phoenix and surrounding areas to join us. Mark October 18 on your calendar and turn up in your numbers for this event.”

Nair added that the POST and POST Plus were committed to fostering a stronger bond within the community.

Pradeep Ramlall, secretariat of the ISACC, said while they were heavily involved in growing business and trade between India and South Africa, giving back to communities was also of great importance.

“While our role is to create visibility and awareness so that the organisation attracts people that are interested in doing business between India and South Africa, we also fulfil our corporate social responsibility. By funding such events, we bring communities together, and ensure, in such instances, it is an enjoyable festival for all. Ultimately, whatever we do needs to benefit the community.

“The fun run/walk is symbolic of bringing people together to enjoy Diwali, but also to remember that maintaining good health is important,” he said.

Seelan Achary, spokesperson for the North Coast Diwali Celebrations Committee, added that the fun run/walk was aimed at bringing the community together, to celebrate the festival.

“It is a time where people can enjoy themselves together, and at the same time keep fit and healthy, which is also important.”

The run/walk entry fee is R50 for adults and R10 for children aged 15 and under. The first 500 entrants will receive a free T-shirt and a goodie bag. The first 100 children to finish the race will also receive a children’s goodie bag.

Participants also stand a chance to win a weekend getaway at Wild Coast valued at R10 000, and cash prizes totalling R5 000.
