Celebrating 53 years of loyalty: Jay and Roshiela Jugmohan's love for the POST
JAY and Roshiela Jugmohan have been loyal readers of the POST for an impressive 53 years, a habit that has become a cherished part of their daily lives.
The couple, who have been married for 53 years, reside in Belfort, Pietermaritzburg.
Jay, 81, spent his career working in sales at an engineering company, while his Roshiela, 75, has been a dedicated housewife.
Although Jay originally lived on Sanctuary Road in Pietermaritzburg and Roshiela in Tongaat, in Durban, their shared love for the POST had brought them together over the decades.
Jay recalls his early days with the newspaper: “I started reading the POST when I was in my 20s. It was taboo to read the paper those days but now I cannot live without it. I have to read it every week. I feel upset when I cannot find it at the stores. I will go out hunting for it until I find a copy, or I borrow the paper from my family to read.”
He said he read the POST “from beginning to end”.
“I love the coverage. It has horse racing and sports, which I love, and sad, heartfelt articles.”
Roshiela shared how the newspaper had become a part of her life after marriage.
“I only really started reading the paper when I got married, after my husband introduced me to it. I read certain things but love the recipes and stars.”
Living in Pietermaritzburg, the couple value the newspaper’s broad coverage.
“We like to know what is happening in the rest of the country and the POST provides that information, plus reading passes the time,” said Roshiela.
Reflecting on the paper’s role in their family history, she added: “We will continue reading the POST until we die. When I was younger, my dad and uncle used to buy the POST and read it but they then hid the paper from the family. We as kids used to steal the paper to read snippets of it. Our parents always said the paper was not for us because it would give us ideas but nowadays we read it proudly and openly.”
