Presidency, State and Zuma to face off in court over legal fees – SABC News
The Presidency and the State Attorney will face off with former President Jacob Zuma and others at the Pretoria High Court tomorrow, in a bid to recover approximately R28 million paid for Zuma’s legal fees in his personal capacity.
This comes after the decisions taken by the Presidency and the State Attorney to cover the legal costs Zuma incurred were invalidated, reviewed and set aside.
In addition, the State Attorney was directed to, among other things, take all the necessary steps to recover the amounts paid by the State for Zuma’s legal costs.
The Presidency and the State Attorney seek an order to recover the funds arguing that following a letter of demand sent to former President Jacob Zuma for the payment of the amount owed, Zuma failed to respond or pay the money.
Zuma, however, has opposed the application charging that “no one, including the court, can believe that he will be able to pay the R28 million in his lifetime for monies that were not paid to him personally”.
The hearing is expected to begin at 10:00am.
