Investing R1. 8 billion in healthcare: Western Cape's ambitious construction plans
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has announced that it currently has 45 healthcare construction projects underway for the 2025/26 financial year, the highest number ever undertaken in a single year. Of these, 30 are expected to be completed before the end of the financial year.
The projects range from routine maintenance and facility upgrades to major capital works and the construction of entirely new clinics and hospitals. Over the next three years, the department will invest R1.8 billion in health infrastructure across the province.
According to the department, this investment aims to expand access, improve safety, and ensure that residents continue to receive care in dignified, modern facilities equipped to meet the demands of a growing population.
With more than 500 healthcare facilities spread across the Western Cape, ongoing maintenance and infrastructure renewal are vital to keep the provincial health system resilient. The current portfolio of projects includes everything from minor refurbishments to large-scale new builds where existing infrastructure can no longer meet community needs.
New or replacement clinic facilities are being built in Saldanha, Knysna, Philippi, Ravensmead, and Mossel Bay.
Upgrades and maintenance: works are underway at Orchard Clinic in De Doorns, Saron Clinic in Wellington, Ceres Clinic, Bothasig Clinic, and Gustrouw Clinic in Strand, alongside lift and sewer line upgrades at Groote Schuur Hospital.
Hospitals: major developments include a R255 million Emergency Centre at Groote Schuur Hospital, a R150 million rehabilitation project at Alexandra and Lentegeur Hospitals, and a R42 million upgrade at Montagu Hospital.
Repairs and maintenance are ongoing at New Somerset, Tygerberg, and Caledon Hospital theatres.
New psychiatric units are being established at Khayelitsha, New Somerset, and Eerste River hospitals.
At Tygerberg Hospital, essential groundwork is underway to prepare for the long-term redevelopment of the site, including sewerage and electrical system upgrades and the construction of new warehouses for linen and consumables.

“Our vision of a healthier Western Cape is becoming a reality, construction site by construction site. These projects are more than buildings. They are symbols of hope, progress, and care for generations to come.”
