WATCH Day 2 | Senzo Mchunu continues his testimony at Parliament Ad Hoc
Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is expected to appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee on Friday for the second day of hearings aimed at probing allegations of corruption within the criminal justice system.
The committee, established to investigate claims raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is tasked with unpacking a scandal that has rocked the South African Police Service and broader institutions.
The 11-member committee, chaired by Soviet Lekganyane, an ANC National Executive Committee member, comprises representatives from the country’s key political parties, including the ANC, DA, EFF, MKP, IFP, and PA.
It commenced its hearings earlier this week, beginning with testimony from Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi himself.
Yesterday, during his first day of proceedings, Minister Mchunu, suspended pending the outcome of these inquiries, sought to defend his record amidst the mounting scrutiny.
“I categorically deny any involvement in corrupt activities within the police service. My commitment has always been to strengthen accountability and rooting out corruption wherever it is found.”
The hearings are expected to continue over the coming weeks, as the committee seeks to unravel the extent of alleged corruption and recommend measures to restore public confidence.
Chairperson Lekganyane emphasised the gravity of the process, remarking, “This committee is here not only to uncover the truth but to ensure that our institutions serve the people with transparency and justice.”
