KZN Education Department takes a stand against bullying at Mount View Secondary School

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has condemned a serious case of bullying at Mount View Secondary School in Verulam, calling it a deeply concerning incident that violates the department’s zero-tolerance stance on harassment and intimidation in schools.

The department expressed deep concern and shock regarding the latest incident, stating that the safety, wellbeing, and emotional health of learners remain its top priority. Decisive action will be taken against any form of bullying.

KZN Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka instructed the Pinetown District Director to visit the school and investigate the complaint. “If learners are found guilty of school bullying, there will be consequences and disciplinary action will be taken,” Hlomuka said.

The department’s statement follows the launch of a province-wide Anti-Bullying Campaign held on Wednesday, led by the KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in partnership with the Department of Education and TruLife. The initiative aims to tackle the growing problem of bullying by promoting a culture of safety, inclusion, and peer-led support among learners.

According to the department, the campaign will empower learners to take a stand against bullying and foster environments where respect and empathy are part of daily school life. As part of the launch, participants were invited to sign an Anti-Bullying Pledge, committing themselves to creating safer and more respectful school communities.

Hlomuka noted that the timing of the incident was especially troubling as learners were preparing for their end-of-year examinations. “As we approach the examination season, the focus for all our learners should be on studying and receiving the necessary support during this crucial period of the academic year. No learner should ever feel unsafe or intimidated at school,” he said.
