KZN on high alert as heavy rains and severe storms set to batter province

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has urged residents to be on high alert as heavy rains and severe thunderstorms are expected to batter large parts of the province over the weekend and into Monday.

The department said it is monitoring the situation through the Provincial Disaster Management Centre.

“According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), severe thunderstorms are expected to affect the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal today, with a likelihood of strong winds, lightning and heavy downpours that may lead to localised flooding,” departmental spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said.

KZN Cogta MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has assured residents that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre is working closely with all relevant stakeholders.

There includes municipalities, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) and provincial departments, to ensure that adequate measures are in place to respond swiftly to any incidents that may arise, especially on major routes.

“We are in constant communication with all disaster management teams across the province to ensure readiness and rapid response.”

“Our priority is the safety of all residents, and we urge communities to remain vigilant, particularly those in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding,” Buthelezi said.

He called on residents to exercise extreme caution when travelling, especially at night, and to avoid crossing low-lying bridges and flooded roads.

Motorists are also urged to reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance during adverse weather conditions, he added.

The department said it will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates as necessary.

“Communities are encouraged to report any weather-related emergencies to their nearest municipal disaster management centres,” he added.
