Two hijacking suspects killed in police shootout at Glebelands Hostel
Two men were shot and killed during a gun battle with police at Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi on Monday night.
The suspects, aged 27 and 30, were wanted in connection with a hijacking that occurred in Harding on September 19 2025.
According to a statement released by the police, the incident stems from an incident where five armed men hijacked a delivery van at gunpoint. One suspect was arrested shortly after the crime, and authorities launched a manhunt for the remaining individuals.
KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said that they received information about the whereabouts of one of the suspects at Glebelands Hostel.
Acting on intelligence, police officers planned a tactical operation that involved approaching the targeted room and identifying themselves. However, the occupants allegedly responded by opening fire on the police.
“Upon their arrival police officers knocked at the targeted room and announced themselves,” says Magwaza.
Magwaza said during the invasion, the suspect started firing shots towards the members.
“A gun battle ensued, and two suspects were fatally wounded in the process,” added Magwaza
Officers recovered two unlicensed firearms and six rounds of ammunition at the scene. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to trace the remaining suspects linked to the hijacking.
Glebelands Hostel has long been associated with violent crime and gang activity, and this latest incident underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in the area.
