Former Police Minister Bheki Cele will appear before Parliament’s Ad hoc Committee over the next two days.

The committee was established following allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Cele, who was the Police Minister between February 2018 and June 2024, would have overseen the operations of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) during his tenure.

The same task team that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, decided to disband on December 31 2024.

On Wednesday, Mchunu told the ad hoc committee that he did not receive a handover from his predecessor, Bheki Cele, on the PKTT.

He has maintained that he took the decision to disband the task team because SAPS resources needed to be spread evenly throughout the country and the task team was not funded.

Mchunu told ANC MP Khusela Diko there were no handover notes involving the PKTT: “ Not as I read it, what was there was a reference to committees the minister was serving. Not necessarily the PKTT in any form.”

Diko asked: “Did he say why he didn’t shut down the unit himself?”

Mchunu replied: “Not really, we didn’t delve into that matter.”
