A dynamic weather pattern is expected across South Africa this weekend, with scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and cooler conditions developing over large parts of the country.

After a calm start on Saturday with no severe weather alerts issued by the South African Weather Service, conditions are expected to become more unsettled heading into Sunday.

Saturday will begin relatively stable, with impact-based warnings listed as nil nationwide. However, a developing system over the western interior will begin to draw moisture across the central and southern regions.

Isolated showers, with a 30% chance of rain, are expected over the central parts of the Northern Cape near Vryburg and Kimberley, extending eastwards into the Free State. More widespread rain and thundershowers, with a 60% chance, will begin to push across the Eastern Cape interior and into southern KwaZulu-Natal.

Parts of the western coastline around Cape Town may also experience light showers overnight, with a 30% chance of rain forecast.

By Sunday, a cold front and onshore flow will bring a marked change in conditions. Much of the eastern half of the country, including KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga Highveld and the eastern Free State, will experience cloudy and cooler weather.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across the Eastern Cape interior, southern Free State and western KwaZulu-Natal, where the chance of rain increases to 60%. The southern coastline, from George to East London, will also see widespread showers with a 60 percent chance, accompanied by gusty winds and cooler temperatures.

In contrast, the northern regions including Limpopo, parts of Mpumalanga and the North West will remain warm to hot, with Sunday temperatures peaking near the low to mid-thirties under partly cloudy skies.

Gauteng may see a few light afternoon showers with a 30% chance of rainfall, but temperatures will remain warm to mild heading into the new week.

Coastal areas will experience moderate to strong winds, particularly along the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal coastlines where south-westerlies could reach 40 km/h.

The Western Cape will remain cool with occasional light coastal showers lingering.
