Mother filmed giving toddler alcohol prompts swift action from authorities
A disturbing video showing a mother giving her toddler alcohol sparked swift action from local officials and Metro Police Neighbourhood Safety Officers (NSOs), who tracked down the woman in Woodstock after following multiple leads.
The footage, received on October 20, was shared among safety stakeholders to help trace the mother and child. By October 24, NSOs were on the ground, scouring known hotspots and nearby areas until they finally identified and located the woman.
The toddler was immediately removed and taken to police’s victim support unit while awaiting the Department of Social Development (DSD).
“DSD arrived within 20 minutes and informed us that the mother already has a case of neglect against her,” said Ward 57 Councillor Yusuf Mohamed. “Earlier this year she was allegedly intoxicated and dropped her child. The child was subsequently taken away and moved to a place of safety. The child was only eventually given back to her about six days ago but now we have this footage. The child is now in a place of safety.”
Mohamed added: “I would just like to say thank you to the NSOs and DSD for stepping up so quickly.”
Mayco member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, also commended the officers for their quick response. “Their response helped ensure the child’s safety and shows how local stakeholders can work together towards safer communities,” he said.
Smith also urged those struggling with substance abuse to seek help by contacting the City’s Social Development Department or calling 0800 872 201 for confidential assistance.
The Cape Argus has since reached out to the police and to the DSD on this matter.
